“Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy & the UK – Landscape & Opportunities”

The use of genetic genealogy in a policing context came to public attention 5 years ago in Sacramento, California with the arrest and subsequent conviction of Joseph DeAngelo (The Golden State Killer). Since then, the science of Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy (FIGG) has become established, contributing to the resolution of over 400 cases in the USA and prompting active conversations in an expanding list of geographies worldwide. A 2020 review by the UK Biometrics and Forensics Ethics Group (BFEG) reviewed the FIGG application and outlined a possible framework for utilization in the UK.

This training will provide insight into how the landscape has evolved since then, how FIGG has become part of the accepted investigative toolbox in the USA and how European countries are now moving forward with legislative and operational FIGG initiatives. The focus of this training is to educate UK policing on all aspects of FIGG and promote debate on if and how to leverage the potential impact of FIGG in the UK. Our distinguished panel of seasoned investigators, prosecutors, and forensic scientists will be sharing their real-world experiences of FIGG so join us to learn more.

The IHIA is a non-profit organization for homicide and violent crime investigators around the world.  We encourage our counterparts in the United Kingdom to join our membership.  To join, click here.
