The International Homicide Investigators Association (IHIA), through a grant from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, convened an Advisory Board of multi-disciplinary professionals to develop a framework for establishing minimum homicide investigator training standards. This board represented resources from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the International Association of Coroner’s and Medical Examiners, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the American Psychological Association, the IHIA, the Fraternal Order of Police, major universities, and state and local law enforcement agencies.
As a result of its work, the Advisory Board Identified nineteen instructional goals appropriate for a basic homicide investigation, training course, and generated a five-day, forty hour training class that encompasses these goals.
This course is designed for any detective, homicide investigator, crime scene technician, medical examiner investigator, prosecutor, or first responder who is tasked with investigating homicides or any other acts of violent criminal activity.
